Dawn
Maldon - Essex
- 0 MPH
Official No. 105902. 54 Tons. Built of wood at Maldon by Cook.
Dawn has now been restored back to the only working example of a full sized tiller steered Thames Barge.
Built as a Stackie for the hay market in 1897 for the Keeble’s of Maldon.
She was one of 2000 barges registed as tillered steered at the turn of the 1900’s. Today she is the only one left anywhere in the world.
Dawn is also unique in being totally open hold known as clean swept hold and therefore able and ready to carry a full cargo. All the hatches are able to be lifted off and a cargo loaded.
The existance of Dawn in Maldon is a true example of living history for all to experience.
