This is a 1/24 scale model of Thames Sailing Barge CAMBRIA.
She is perhaps the best known of the barges, as she was the last one to trade under sail alone
(until the early 1970's) and was skippered by the much renowned Bob Roberts, who has published
many of his memories and experiences in his books.
A scratch built model, she has a considerable amout of detail, and we're still observing small touches added by Mick Martin, the builder, who was awarded a Gold Medal at the Model Engineer exhibition for this model.
She has been built with an obvious cargo of coal, a trade the barge was involved in for much of her working life. However, she would not have sailed with her hatch covers removed (as in the model), as this would have been a serious risk, but it makes the model at rest appear very realistic.
The model is in sailing condition, as has taken part in the Model Barge Championships this year, sailing in the newly-introduced Coasting Class at the Maldon event in July.
The full size sailing barge CAMBRIA is to be seen at the Dolphin Yard Sailing Barge Museum at Sittingbourne in Kent. She is not currently in the same condition as the model, but hoped to be restored in the future under the auspices of the Cambria Trust
